Four Questions to Ask Your Partner Before Buying a House Together
If you got engaged over Valentine’s Day, congratulations! You’ll likely be discussing financing over the coming months, including your housing situation.
Before you buy a house together, here are four questions you should discuss:
1. How much debt do you have?
2. How much house can we afford?
3. Where do we want to live, and for how long?
4. What happens if we break up?
Talking to a lender can help you with Questions 1 and 2. A mortgage lender will look at your debt, income and credit score and tell you the maximum amount you can spend on a home. If you need to pay down debt, a good lender can also help you figure out the quickest and best way to do that to improve your credit score.
If you’re not married, please discuss your options with a family law attorney. Having a written agreement in place at time of purchase can save you a lot of heartache and money down the road. We’ve helped people sell their homes after a breakup, and it's never easy on the parties involved. A written agreement can reduce stress and ensure that both parties are treated fairly.
